Johnny Kongo (the Johnny Kongo Trio,) Evelyn Roper (Opal moon,) Sean Turner, and Michael Schmidt (Schmidt Outta Luck) bring their high octane blend of outlaw country, classic honky-tonk, and good old rock and roll to the western Slope each Summer as Kongo, Evelyn and Turner for your dancing and listening pleasure.
As 1950’s post-war America boomed, roadhouses and juke joints (also called Honky Tonks) couldn’t keep up with the demand for music loud enough for the kids to dance the night away, as the rowdy crowds often drowned out the music with their raucous cheer. Amplification (and the birth of the electric guitar) soon followed, and dovetailed nicely with the sounds coming out of hotbeds like Bakersfield, Nashville, and Texas.
Soon the crazy new sound came to be known as “Honky Tonk,” and artists like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Roger Miller reigned supreme.
Kongo, Evelyn and Turner bring back that lively, old-school flavor with classic instrumentation, including upright “doghouse” bass, piano, acoustic, electric, and steel guitars, with a high-lonesome-rocky-mountain-surf-and turf style all their own.
